Week 1 Report
s dawn comes to the Great Forest, the wan sunlight barely penetrates the
smoke and dust of battle. All across the region, mighty armies clash, and as
the woods burn so the waters of the Talabec run red.
The Emperor has gathered a mighty host. Having repulsed the vile beasts of the woods that attacked his council of war, Karl Franz has led a score of expeditions into the darkest depths of the forest. The Emperor, it is said is possessed of a grim determination to locate the Nemesis Crown, for he sees in it a relic of the time of Sigmar with which he might scour the land of the darkness that assails it. The Emperor is aided in his quest by a great many heroes of the Empire, not least among them the men of the Helstrom 4th, who provide sterling service in enacting their lord's orders, as do the renowned Eagles of Polsk.
But other voices offer counsel to the Emperor - voices of warning. Some of the most senior officers of the Church of Sigmar question the wisdom of capturing and utilising the Nemesis Crown, fearing perhaps that its power might turn out more a curse than a blessing. To date, the Emperor and his circle have listened to such counsel patiently, taking it as one voice of opinion amongst many.
To the east, the throngs of Thorgrim have fought many bloody battles. Thorgrim has ordered Joseph Bugman himself to guard the routes to the Great Forest against any Greenskins that would attempt to make the journey from their dark mountain lairs. In this, the Dwarfs have been extremely successful, though word of the Crown's resting place still eludes them.
For Grimgor, the first days of the war have driven him into a rage. His attempts to coordinate the actions of the numerous warlords have been stymied by the focused attacks made upon them by the Dwarfs and others. But, Grimgor has formulated a plan so cunning that Mork would be jealous. If, Grimgor reasons, the Men and the Stunties want to ambush his armies beneath the dark forest eaves, he'll simply burn the entire forest down. Grimgor wants the Crown, make no mistake, but he knows that causing as much death and destruction as possible will force his enemies to take rash actions. So, Grimgor's runners carry new orders - loot and burn, pillage and murder. Force the weakling Men and Dwarfs and anyone else to come and fight his armies. And then, once he's beaten them in battle, he'll have all the time in the world to locate the Crown.
But the war has not only brought conflict between the armies of Men, Dwarfs and Greenskins. Many others have been drawn into the unfolding events, either directly or indirectly.
With Morghur's armies seeking to expel the weakling Men from their birthright lairs, a great many Beastlords have risen to enact his orders, chief among them the being known as the Plaguebeast, whose totem and familiar is the black crow, whose gaze brings death. The Empire and others have been relatively successful in containing these raids, yet with so many Greenskins flooding into the forests, the armies of the Empire may find themselves hard pressed to counter both threats at once.
South, across the mountains into Bretonnia, a mighty lord by the name of Sir Beoveld has issued a call to arms against the forces of undeath massing in the Badlands, and his initial forays appear to have cost the Tomb Kings dear. Yet still, tales persist of ghostly vessels passing down the Reik by moonlight, fuelling rumours that the Tomb Kings intend to launch an attack deep within the Empire. Many see this as unlikely, yet still the rumours spread...
To the west, the Dark Elves appear to have broken through the blockade thrown up against them by the High Elves, besting the fleets of Lord Giladis of Lothern and landing a number of forces in outlying regions. To date, it appears that the Dark Elves are intent, true to their nature, in taking advantage of the bloodshed and chaos to claim their own share of the spoils of war.
From the east comes a sound that many have taken for distant thunder amidst the peaks of the Worlds Edge Mountains. Yet they are mistaken, for the sound is that of the Ogre tribes descending upon the Barren Hills in a maelstrom of blood and pillage. Though scattered Ogre tribes in the other regions have found themselves outnumbered and beaten by smaller forces, the Ogre migration that appears to be heading into the Great Forest from the east appears ready to pound all to dust.
Deep within the forest, the Wood Elves find that their eternal battle with the Beastmen has become a struggle for the very survival of the forest. Naith the Prophetess has sent word to the kindreds abroad in the Great Forest that should Morghur's influence wax strong, then his vile touch may begin to transform the very forest itself, turning the trees into dark, twisted things. And should this taint spread southwards, it may threaten the very homelands of the Asrai. Naith counsels her kin not to become embroiled in the affairs of other races, but to stand strong against the vile children of Old Nyte.
To the north, a great many warbands of Chaos have been sighted. Some bands travel by ship, launching raids as they go. These attacks have thus far proven ineffectual, yet the names of a number of terrible and mighty warlords spread through the populace: Arkhan Skold, Khargrin Hammer of the Wastes, Lepros the Bringer of Blight, and the mysterious Cursemaster.
The forces of the Skaven Under Empire too appear to be massing, though not in great number and to what greater purpose none can say. That the Skaven have avoided conflict with the armies of the Empire appears clear, causing grave concern amongst certain factions of the Emperor's council.
The Vampire Counts too have launched a series of successful attacks, each centered upon one of the many tombs, gravesites and ancient battlefields of the Great Forest. Some whisper that Rahtep intends to raise a host of the undead such as has never before walked the Old World, and already, the foul stink of bloated corpses permeates the air beneath the dark forest eaves.
Even further afield, the enigmatic Lizardmen are mustering against the forces of evil, attacking from their hidden fastnesses in the Southlands and quashing the plans of the Tomb Kings and others. Though none in the Great Forest may ever know of the sacrifices made to the south, the aims of the forces of light are furthered with each attack the Lizardmen launch.
These and many other battles have been fought in the opening days of the search for the Nemesis Crown. What heroic deeds and fell crimes will be done before the Crown is claimed, none can know. Suffice to say that as the war grows in intensity and more and more armies fight to influence its outcome, so the forest shall echo with the clamour of battle and the cries of the dying.
